1)
INSTANT MESSENGER involves people
logging-in and then typing their comments
to another person, as the messages appear
"instantly" on the other's screen. CHAT
ROOMS are places where more than two
people may gather to do instant messaging,
while others are making similar
contributions. These chats may be public
place or private conferences at the exact
same time. One can read a number of
"threads" taking place simultaneously on
several topics.
|
|

|
2)
EMAIL involves typing a message and
sending it to another person's email
address, where it arrives moments later,
but may not be open and read until later.
DISCUSSION LISTS are collections of
several people who have subscribed to a
list server. When one sends a message to
the server's email address, everyone on
the list gets a copy of that message, but
copies arrive at different times after
being sent.

3)
INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDING is done
when people sign-in to a common work area
that allows them to draw (erase or hand
write) their contributions, to
simultaneously see what others are drawing
(erasing or writing), and to share
simultaneous editing
opportunities.
|
|

|
4)
FAX is one preferred way to send
diagrams to another person, but the page
outputs from fax machines are not easily
modified. Faxing software allows faxes to
be sent and received from
computers.
|
|

|
5)
TELEPHONE CONFERENCING can be as
simple as picking up the phone and calling
someone, or as complex as gathering many
voices together and meeting in real time
through the Internet with a "telephony
bridging" program.
|
|

|
6)
VOICE MESSAGING can be as modest as
leaving an audio recording on an answering
machine tape or as sophisticated as
sending "voice packets" (containing the
same information) to thousands of
people.
|
|

|
7)
VIDEO CONFERENCING means being able
to actually see and talk to the other
people, while they see you and talk back
in real time! Although this is not yet
perfect, body language is communicated
well (using audio also communicates voice
intonations).
|
|

|
8)
IMAGE MESSAGING means sending
personal "video packets" (containing a
videotaped message) as recorded on a
digital camera or converted from a
standard videotape.
|
|

|
9)
APPLICATION SHARING happens when
more than one person use the same software
program through a web conferencing system.
This can allow multiple people to
collaborate on preparing budgets with one
spread sheet, altering blueprints with a
single drafting package, and editing press
releases with a unique word processor.
Application sharing is used more for
information creation, rather than
dissemination.
|
|

|
10)
DOCUMENT ATTACHMENT is accomplished
by sending a file as an attachment to an
email message. Receipt of this file allows
many people to view the same slideshow,
read the same letter, or scan the same
data base, but at their own leisure and
not at the same time. Document attachment
is used more for information
dissemination, rather than
creation.
|
|

|
11)
CO-BROWSING happens when more than
one person is able to look at the
identical webpage simultaneously. It is
usually accomplished through application
sharing of a web browser, but can also be
achieved with everyone simply visiting the
same location with their own web browser
(see below).
|
|

|
12) WEB
BROWSING is using a software program
or application (Navigator, Explorer, etc.)
to search and view information on the
internet. Today, web browsing is possible
on more than just a computer. Mobile
phones and other hand held devices now
have web capabilities.
